Bill’s first canoe
trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area
Wilderness region of Minnesota was in 1966 with
his cousins, where he met Rolf Skrien. The
second trip was in 1967, when he then stayed on
and worked for Rolf and Gail Skrien in their
canoe outfitting business, Way of the
Wilderness. Since then, he has returned many
times, and annually takes groups from the Akron
Fossils and Science Center, an organization
in Akron, Ohio that he founded in 2005. He has
also written his book aptly named Getting the
Wilderness in You.
